A decorative fountain can collect contamination even when the water looks clear. Keeping it running does not make the water suitable for your cat to drink.
What Can Collect in the Water?

Falling leaves, bird droppings, pollen and bugs can land in outdoor fountains. Remove debris rather than relying on the pump to keep the water clean.
Give Your Cat Fresh Drinking Water
Give your cat a separate source of fresh drinking water and clean its water bowl daily. Do not choose a stone fountain to prevent or treat chin acne. If your cat develops skin problems, ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, contact your veterinarian.
Clean When Film or Buildup Appears
For the fountain itself, remove debris and clean the bowl when film or buildup appears. Do not rely on a monthly scrub or continuous pump operation to keep it clean.
For routine cleaning of our painted basin, we recommend one part white vinegar and nine parts water. Wipe gently with a soft cloth or brush, then rinse thoroughly. Do not add bleach tablets, fragrance or household cleaners to the operating water.
Our outdoor fountain cleaning guide covers bowl and pump care. For operating problems, see our outdoor fountain troubleshooting guide.
