PINEAPPLE FINIAL FOUNTAIN

The Pineapple Has Meant Welcome Since the 1700s

Colonial households put a pineapple on the gatepost, over the door and on the newel post, and everybody knew what it meant. The fruit was rare and expensive, so putting one out was a way of saying that whatever was in the house was for the guest as much as the host. The symbol outlived the scarcity. It is still carved into porch columns up and down the East Coast.

That is what sits on top of this fountain, and it is why the piece belongs at the front of a house rather than the back. A pineapple fountain at the end of a front walk says something specific to the person coming up it, which a plain tiered bowl does not.

Under the finial, the upper bowl carries egg and dart molding around its rim, the classical repeating pattern of ovals and points. It does something practical as well as decorative. The molding interrupts the sheet of water coming over the edge, so the overflow arrives in even segments instead of one unbroken curtain. The whole piece is cast concrete in an aged gray green that reads as a fountain that has been standing there a while.

What You Get With This Pineapple Fountain

  1. 01

A pineapple finial, which most tiered fountains do not have.

The colonial symbol of welcome, sitting at the top of the piece. It is the reason to put this one at the front of a house instead of the back.

  2. 02

Egg and dart molding splits the overflow.

The classical pattern around the upper rim breaks the sheet of water into even segments as it comes over. Detail that changes what the water does, not only what the fountain looks like.

  3. 03

Cast concrete in aged gray green.

Real mass and a finish that already looks settled rather than freshly poured. Concrete keeps developing color outdoors through the first seasons.

  4. 04

Pump included, no plumbing and no wiring.

It recirculates the same water and runs from one standard outdoor outlet. Fill it with a hose and plug it in.

Where to put it

Put it where people arrive. A front yard fountain position at the end of a walk, inside a circular drive, or centered in a bed you see from the porch is where the pineapple actually does its job. The tiers ship separately and stack on site, and concrete at this size is a two person job, so choose the position and level the ground before you start assembling rather than after. It needs no lighting to work, though a low spotlight from the front picks the finial out nicely after dark.

Questions About This Pineapple Fountain

Why a pineapple
It is the colonial symbol of hospitality. Pineapples were rare and costly in the 1700s, so displaying one told a guest they were getting the best of the house. The symbol stuck, and it is still carved into porches and gateposts today.
What is egg and dart molding
A classical repeating pattern of ovals alternating with pointed shapes, cut around the rim of the upper bowl. Here it also splits the overflow into even segments rather than letting it come over as one unbroken sheet.
How hard is the assembly
The tiers ship separately and stack on site with no tools. Concrete at this size is a two person lift, so level the ground and settle on the position before you start. Once the base is seated the bowls drop on, the pump goes in, and you fill it with a hose.
Does it need lights
There are none built in and no wiring for them. If you want it visible after dark, one low voltage spotlight aimed up from the front lights the finial and the falling water. We also carry fountains with the lighting cast in if you would rather not add anything.

Ships free from California or New Jersey, and it is covered for three years.

Instruction sheet was blurry

3 stars. Product is gorgeous, but the assembly sheet looked like a bad photocopy. We had to wing it.

Best garden investment

We have had it for 3 years now. Still works perfectly and looks like real hand-carved stone.

Survived the frost

Left it out in Maryland winter (drained). No cracks or flaking in the spring. The fiber reinforced concrete is very durable.

Still gray and gorgeous

Bought this in 2022. It has been through 4 hot Florida summers and the color has not faded. Very durable finish.

The finish is very consistent and has a great aged texture. Looks hand-crafted and expensive.

Needs a strong level surface

4 stars. If your ground is slightly uneven, the water will only spill from one side. It takes time to level it.

Instant curb appeal

We put it in our front walkway. Neighbors literally stop their cars to look at it. Best purchase.

Silent pump motor

You can not hear the pump at all. Only the sound of the water. This was very important to me.

S
Steven Y.
High-grade silent pump

The water sound is loud but the pump itself is silent. That was my biggest worry and it is perfect.

Too heavy for me

2 stars. I am 75 and could not move the 56 lb box from my porch. I had to pay someone to help me. The product is nice but be aware of the weight.

Not easy to clean

3 stars. The middle tier has a deep rim that is hard to scrub without a special brush. It collects a lot of gunk.

Perfect gift for parents

I bought this for my mom's retirement gift. She loves bird watching and this brings them right to her window.

Worth every penny

I looked at similar ones at the garden center for $800. This is a much better value for real concrete material.

A welcoming sanctuary

Turns our backyard into a peaceful sanctuary. 10/10 would buy again for our next property.

W

Refilling is a chore

3 stars. In the heat, it loses water fast. I have to add a gallon every day to keep the pump submerged.

R
Robert K.
Survived Minnesota blizzard

Left it out through a terrible 2024 winter. No cracking. The fiber-reinforced concrete is much better than resin.

UV protected finish

Sitting in direct sun all afternoon for 2 years and zero fading. The protective coating is worth it.

A relaxing sanctuary

Watching the birds use this while I have my coffee on the porch is the highlight of my day.

Stately front yard anchor

Placed it in a circular bed of flowers. It looks incredibly formal. I love the pineapple detail on top.

Water stays clear longer

Since the source is elevated, dirt from the ground does not easily blow into the upper tiers.

Truly a masterpiece

This is easily the best looking water feature I have ever owned. Outstanding design.

L

Pump cord is short

4 stars because I had to use an outdoor extension cord. For a large garden, 6 feet is not enough.

C
Christopher E.
Stunning at night

We added a small solar spotlight. The shadows from the tiered bowls look incredible on our house at night.

E

Hose is a bit short

3 stars. The internal tube was barely long enough to reach the pump in the bottom basin. I had to stretch it quite a bit during assembly.

W

Splashes in high wind

3 stars. When it is gusty, the water from the top tier splashes onto our flagstone patio. I have to refill it more often than I expected.

D

Color was darker in person

3 stars because the gray is charcoal dark. I expected a lighter cement color from the website photos.
