Tabletop Fountain Care Guide: Tap Water, Essential Oils, and Fixing Noisy Pumps

White marks, cloudy water and pump noise are signs that your tabletop fountain needs attention. Start by unplugging it. This guide explains which water to use, how to clean our painted finish and what to check before replacing the pump.

Which Water Should You Use?

White mineral deposits on a glass

Boiling tap water does not turn it into distilled water. If hard water is leaving white deposits, we recommend using distilled water to reduce mineral buildup. Ordinary drinking-water filters may leave dissolved minerals behind. You will still need to change the water and clean the fountain.

The U.S. Geological Survey explains water hardness and mineral deposits.

Use Water Only

Use water only. We do not recommend adding essential oils, fragrance, soap or household cleaners to the operating fountain.

If you have already added them and the pump becomes noisy or stops working, unplug the fountain and empty it. Contact us about cleaning and checking the pump before buying a replacement.

How to Clean Our Painted Basin

White vinegar and a soft brush for routine fountain cleaning

Unplug the fountain and empty the bowl. For routine cleaning of our painted basin, we recommend one part white vinegar and nine parts water. Wipe gently with a soft cloth or brush, then rinse thoroughly.

Clean the pump separately. Remove debris from the intake and rinse any removable filter. Do not run vinegar solution through the pump or soak the whole pump as a standard cleaning step. If scale remains or you are unsure which parts can be removed, send us the pump label and a photo.

Running Time and Daily Checks

Running water does not replace cleaning. Check the water level each day and clean the fountain when you notice film, debris or buildup. Follow the operating instructions for your model. If nobody can check it while you are away, switch it off, empty it and clean it before leaving.

What to Check if the Pump Is Noisy

Unplug the fountain before checking the pump. Check the water level, intake, tubing and whether the pump is seated correctly. Make sure any supplied suction cups or pads are in place.

Do not force the pump housing open or pull out internal parts. If the noise continues after these checks, send us a photo and a short video.

How to Reduce Splashing

For splashing, check that the fountain is level and the tubing is connected. Refill to the recommended level for your model, without overfilling. Adjust the flow if the pump has a flow control.
