Choose a rock fountain's power source around when you want to use it, the sunlight at the panel and access to a suitable outlet. Solar is not automatically weak or unreliable, and plug-in power does not make every model suitable for unattended, nonstop operation.
Compare three power arrangements
| Check | Direct solar | Solar with battery | Plug-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power source | Sunlight reaching the panel | Panel plus stored charge | Specified mains supply or supplied transformer |
| Evening use | Not from sunlight alone | Possible within the system's stored charge and controls | Possible when the model allows it and power is available |
| What to confirm | Panel position, cable reach and pump performance | Battery included, charging needs, runtime and replacement parts | Outlet, cord reach, supplied voltage and permitted operating hours |
| Lights | Check the listed kit | Check combined light and pump runtime | Check that lights are actually included |
| Water care | Check level, clean and refill | Check level, clean and refill | Check level, clean and refill |
Smart Living's solar fountain FAQ distinguishes its direct-solar and battery-equipped systems. That distinction matters when comparing kits; it does not establish the runtime or compatibility of a different model.
Match the pump to the water path
A replacement pump must fit the fountain's operating water level, tubing, electrical supply and required flow at the actual lift height. Do not choose from a maximum flow number alone: the pump must still deliver the required flow at the top outlet. A small bird bath spray pump is not automatically a replacement for a cascading rock fountain pump.
Before converting a plug-in model to solar, contact us with the model. A solar panel cannot simply be connected to any existing pump, and changing the pump may also affect any connected lights. Do not assume a compatible conversion kit is available.
Plan for the hours you want to use it
For a direct-solar system, compare the panel's actual sunlight needs with your location. If evening use matters, choose a suitable battery system or plug-in model and check its operating instructions. A battery label alone does not promise a full night of running.
Check running cost without guessing
For a plug-in pump, calculate electricity use from its actual wattage and operating hours: watts Γ hours Γ· 1,000 gives kilowatt-hours. Multiply by your electricity rate. For example, a hypothetical 20-watt pump used for 5 hours consumes 0.1 kWh; that is a calculation example, not a specification for our fountains.
Solar avoids grid electricity for the pump when it operates entirely from its panel or battery. Compare the purchase price and replacement parts too, rather than calling the whole system free to run.
Route the power safely
Use the supplied or specified power supply, a suitable GFCI-protected outdoor outlet and appropriate weather protection for connections. Keep cords away from foot traffic and damage. Do not bury an ordinary pump cord or extension cord under mulch, soil or gravel as a shortcut. Low voltage does not automatically make a cable suitable for burial.
Before using an extension cord, check whether the model's instructions allow it. If you are unsure, contact us. If the supplied cord cannot reach an appropriate outlet, choose a closer location or have a qualified electrician arrange a suitable permanent supply. ESFI's outdoor electrical guidance explains why extension cords are a temporary solution rather than permanent wiring.
Both systems still need water care
Check the water before starting and during use, more often in hot or windy weather. Switch off and disconnect power before reaching into the basin. Empty dirty water, clean and refill as needed. Continuous circulation does not guarantee fresh water or remove the need to clean. Follow the selected model's winter instructions.

Questions before you choose
Can a solar fountain run at night?
A direct-solar panel cannot power the pump without sunlight. A compatible battery-equipped system may run after dark within its available charge and controls; check that model's stated conditions.
Do plug-in fountains need to run 24/7?
No universal schedule applies. Follow the supplied pump's operating instructions and check its water level. Running continuously does not replace cleaning.
Does every electric rock fountain include LEDs?
No. Check the selected listing for lights, their power supply and controls.
Can I hide the cord under gravel?
Do not assume an ordinary cord is suitable for burial or covering. Follow the equipment's instructions and arrange a proper supply if the intended location cannot be reached safely.
