How to Stop Your Dog Drinking from the Bird Bath (5 Easy Hacks)

Bird bath water can become contaminated. Read our guide to Giardia and bird bath water for more on the risk.

1. Provide Fresh Drinking Water

Start by providing fresh drinking water in a clean bowl your dog can reach easily.

2. Supervise Your Dog

Supervise your dog near the bird bath. Use β€œleave it” training to redirect your dog, and reward it for moving away from the bath.

3. Use a Suitable Barrier

If your dog keeps returning, restrict access with a suitable, stable barrier. Do not rely on pedestal height alone. Avoid surrounding the bath with dense planting that gives cats somewhere to hide.

4. The "Leave It" Command (Training Opportunity)

Sometimes, the problem isn't the garden; it's the habit. Use this as a training moment.

The Fix: Positive reinforcement.

  • Action: Walk your dog on a leash near the bird bath. As soon as they look at it or move towards it, say "Leave it."

  • Reward: When they look away from the bath and back at you, immediately reward them with a high-value treat (like cheese or chicken).

  • Goal: You want them to associate ignoring the bird bath with getting a delicious snack.

5. Skip Scent and Prickly-Plant Deterrents

Skip citrus peels, essential oils and prickly plants as deterrents. Use supervision and a physical barrier instead.

Choose a pedestal bird bath for the space and check its actual dimensions. Height alone does not keep a dog out of the water.
